Candid Photography in Indian Weddings

After the enthusiastic trend of tiring posing and unnatural smiles, the new fashion calls for natural pictures through candid photography. Candid photography is becoming highly popular among all formal and informal events including Indian Weddings.

While, it is a relief for Indian wedding photographers all over, since grouping an overwhelming amount of guests for ideal photographs is no walk in the park, it also calls in for certain challenges. The first and foremost challenge is how not to let people know that they are being photographed.

People have a tendency of acting unnatural as soon as they are signaled of being photographed. Suddenly, the smiles are wider, eyes are flashy, and shoulders tense. This will certainly not make a good candid photo. Thus, there are some tips that will help capture that perfect candid photo that both – the photographer as well as the photographed aspires.

Avoid Any Kind of Give Away
Sidestep any unnatural tensed up pose by not letting your subjects know that they are being photographed. Indian weddings are full of guests and lightings, which give enough chance to any photographer to,
1.       Take hip shots
2.       Avoid use of flash
3.       Avoid use of unnatural halogen light lamps

If you position your camera or try to give it an angle in front of guests, they will certainly be indicated of your intentions. Therefore, taking hip shots can help capture candid photos while the subjects are still in their natural pose, unaware that they are being shot. Taking multiple shots will cost nothing and you can take several shots until you get hold of the perfect photo.
The second enemy of candid photos is the flash. People suddenly become aware of being photographed and slightly tense up. Indian weddings use a lot of venue of lightings as well as the video lightings is also available, making it easy for you to avoid using flashes. While, several ceremonies are performed at night, natural lights must be used as much as possible.
Halogen lights very popular but very unnatural. Avoid them.

Be All Time Ready and Pay More Attention
Another challenge of candid photography in an Indian wedding photography is that there is always too much going on everywhere and you have to be ever ready with your camera. Carry your camera everywhere so that,
1-      People do not expect you to click photos every time they see your camera
2-      You are always ready to capture all important events

When you walk around with camera in your hand, and do not click, people are less likely to act unnatural or tense up every time they see you. This will give you a chance to angle your camera above hip shots when you finally decide to shoot. However, you might also want to use long zoom

There are too many unexpected expressions or situations that a marriage experiences, which make up for amazing candid photos. But, if you are not ready, you lose them. If you do not pay much attention, you lose them.

For example, there are family members that meet after years and when they see each other, there are expressions of joy, emotions, and awe. There are moments when bride and groom take sneak peak look at each other. These moments are worthy, interesting and capable of making long lasting and celebrated pictures, since people are most unaware of their surroundings and let their guards down. However, if you are not careful enough, you lose all of them. Shoot people when they are in motion and doing something.

Capture Emotions
Take advantage if there are other photographers hired. People usually let their guards down immediately after they think that formal photography is over. However, you can take advantage by clicking photos immediately after the session of the other photographer is over.
Clicking photos when all people are focusing their attention somewhere else is also a good technique when capturing natural photos.

In case there are no other photographers, create the situation. Click people with people to capture emotions.
